Mayor

Mayor William "Bill" Stewart

I could never express the gratitude in my heart to you for allowing me to be your Mayor. The people who live and work in our city are of the nicest group of people I have ever known.

I am excited about the progress of our city. Recently, we were awarded a grant to add sidewalks throughout our town. These walkways have added a nice area for us to exercise or enjoy a beautiful day outside, not to mention they add an aesthetic value to the landscape. Furthermore, the grant we received allows us to enjoy them for a fraction of the cost. The sidewalk projects will be continued as the development progresses to Juniper Avenue toward Steel Creek Lodge. Satsuma also has a qualifying project for the congressional stimulus package for which we received funding. Baker Road will be resurfaced at no cost to the city.

Construction will soon begin on the Senior Activity Building. It will be located on the west side of the entrance road going into the Steel Creek Lodge. It will also serve as a hub for first responders in the event of a disaster; but realizing that we only see a few storms a decade, the structure will mostly serve the city and its senior population for recreation and other city events.

The Planning Board was recently given a partial grant for a "Comprehensive Plan Study". The plan will help our city to chart its future growth. Among the many benefits, one will increase our qualifications for federal and state funds. Another advantage of this study is that it will open the door for the much needed core businesses in the city.

Our city and its natural resources is quickly becoming a favorite stop for bass fishing circuits. With the addition of a hotel to our business base we will certainly see the growth of the services that we all desire for our future. I have spoken with several banks and challenged them to put a branch in this area to serve their customers and our citizens. The grocery store issue will no doubt be resolved as soon as our economy allows.

The Satsuma Veterans Memorial is now complete; the men who paid the ultimate price for their country are memorialized forever in the hearts of all Americans and now we have a reminder of those who died from our community. The previous Mayor and Council, Ms. Ludgood, and the nameless individuals who worked so hard to make the memorial a reality will never be forgotten. As one of the gentlemen who so intently worked on the project told me "this is about those guys, not us." I am sure that I speak for all as I express our appreciation to those living and dead who were willing to lay down their lives for the freedom of our country.

The City staff is here to serve you; they are easily contacted by calling city hall at 675-1440. I believe that our staff is seasoned and sensitive to the needs of the people we serve. The desire of this administration is to see that all your dealings with city hall are pleasant. Our goal is that all your questions will be answered and you are treated with respect and distinction.
